Mon Island

You arrive at what seems like a tropical island paradise!
Strange monsters and sphinxes with unusual traits can be seen milling about. You are ushered towards a lab, where two professors greet you, before you have a chance to explore.




Professor Tamarisk: "Hello! It's very nice to meet you. I'm Professor Tamarisk."


Professor Coconut: "And I'm Professor Coconut."

Professor Tamarisk and Professor Coconut: "Welcome to Mon Island!"


Professor Tamarisk: ""This island is inhabited by Monsters, or 'Mon' for short! We sphinxes live alongside these monsters as friends. We play together, and at other times we work together. Some people use their monsters to battle and develop closer bonds with them. What do I do? I conduct research into sphinxification of monsters, and monification of sphinxes."

Professor Coconut: "I myself study the mixture of mon traits on sphinxes."

Professor Tamarisk: "Now, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?"

...simply post the sphinx you will be RPing with, along with them saying their name and a sentence or so about themselves. Pets/classes don't need to be used on only this sphinx, this is mostly for RP purposes. (Although it would probably be the most fun to use that sphinx.)

Please also include in the entry your monster choice from the samples below by posting it's species name in bold along with it's gender and nickname. (If you want it attached, please also note it.)
Everybody who enters will receive the starter they chose in the entry. If you forget to add your starter choice, feel free to edit it in.

This entry 'game' will be open until the event ends.

Professor Tamarisk: "I have to admit, I'm extra happy that you have decided to visit Mon Island. You see, a strange phenomenon has recently occurred... a one way portal opened from another world bringing new mon onto this island. Also, around the same time this portal appeared mon began to turn into sphinxes, and some sphinxes have begun to take on mon features! This seems to have driven the monsters and sphinxes affected by it 'wild'. I do have special healing capture capsules they can be caught with which will cure them of this madness."

Professor Coconut: "Would you be willing to help us cure these wild sphinx mons?"

SPECIAL NOTES FOR THIS EVENT! 

(There's a lot of them, so please read thoroughly.)

Obviously we're doing a bit of a 'tongue in cheek'  'spoof' of another game. BUT, due to some things being very close we have a few special rules.

1. To keep away from full copyright infringement we are using gatcha capsules to catch the mon in. ^_^ If you really want to have a pokeball on your sphinx it can be done with the sphinx becoming 'untradeable'. 

2. Every person will start with 3 regular gatcha capsules and one 'master capsule' to catch mons with! If you win a sphinx it uses up your gatcha capsule. Legendary class mons can only be caught by a master capsule (or the master capsule can be used to automatically catch a mon... if you're first to get there.)

3. If we think something is far too close to a copyrighted version it will be given an 'untradeable' tag. What this means is that the only 'trade' you can do with these is to return it to us so we can give it away to somebody else. This is to keep the sphinx from becoming a commodity so it stays more technically as 'fan art'. The only exception to this is we will have mon trading at the end of this event where you may then gift or trade mon sphinxes/pets, only for other sphinxes/pets from this event.

4. 'Mon' from this event will not be unique with their colouring/traits. So there could be numerous of the same species/type out there. These of course can be further customized with hair/clothing/classes/etc. (There may be some exceptions to this during the event, but if there are it will be noted.) Gijinkas/Cosplay mons from this event are considered to be 'non-unique' as well. Some will be rarer then others in that they won't be put into a specific prize choice folder, but are not off the table to have made. Basically, everybody deserves to have access to their favourite mon. ^_^

5. With the starters, only the first two stages can be attached to a sphinx. If you evolve it to the 3rd stage it will be unattached/removed from the cert (because it's too big).

6. There are only three of us working on this, and literally over 1,000 examples to draw from and it's impossible to make them all. So please, please, please don't post saying such things as 'I hope that there is going to be (mon type).' or ' I really want (mon type) to show up.' etc. This is only because, in all honesty, this can make the artists feel as if they didn't do enough and let the person down.   We're doing our best to make as many as we can to make everybody happy.  ^_^

7. Don't take this event's plot/encounters too seriously. It's made to be a more lighthearted event.

3. Mon Games

As mentioned in #2 of the 'special notes' information earlier, everybody who joins the event (by following the Professor's instructions above) will start off with 3 regular gatcha capsules and one master capsule.
(We may hand out more later on if we deem that the event needs it.)

Beyond games, from time to time there will be a wild mon (which is a sphinx or a pet) that appears with a tag of... 'A wild mon appears!'  and it will have a number posted with it. THEN, everybody who wants to catch that mon (and still has gatcha capsules left) may post a d20 roll once. The first person to hit that number or higher wins the mon and their capsule is used up. (If you fail to catch the mon you keep your capsule, it's only gone if you win.)

If nobody hits the specified number or higher within 5 minutes of it appearing, that mon runs away. (It may pop up again somewhere at some point.)

Winning a mon sphinx or pet in a game will also use up a capsule (unless otherwise noted).

There are three exceptions to this...
1. Legendaries can only be caught with a master capsule.
2. You may use a master capsule on any mon instead of making a game roll and before somebody else wins it to automatically catch it! (You may not use your Master Capsule after you have made a game roll.)
3. Legendaries may have games for them instead of randomly showing up. If you win that legendary it will also use up your master capsule. 
4. There may not be enough legendaries for everybody, so don't forget that you can use your master capsule as exception #2.

When sending in to cert your newly caught mon sphinx you may change it's class to 'Partner' or 'Battler', with the option of placing a gatcha capsule on the cert.  (This is only for the sphinx versions, not the pets.)

----> Gym Battles <----

When we run a game, we will note if it's a 'gym battle' and that game will have a set difficulty number. If it is noted as a gym battle then with your entry (only one post if it has numerous posting for the game) with a d20 roll. If you get higher then the game runner's roll you win a badge! (You don't need to be the game's winner to win a badge, just entering will suffice.)

After a person has collected 8 badges they may challenge Champion Eiko (the kimono girl)  to win a mon sphinx, mon pet, or starter evolution (the winner's choice). You may also choose to have your sphinx's job changed to Champion (lvl 3) along with one of your Mon sphinxes.
If you fail the Champion Battle you may try again by still playing Gym Challenge Games. If you would have collected another badge (above 8) you may challenge Eiko again.

Due to this, there will be NO EDITING d20 roll posts!! So be careful with your entries! (Even if it's a big contest, you can't go back to edit or re-post!)
(And of course, as a site rule, never, ever delete a post without permission.)

Sphinx Evolution

After travelling worlds, Champion Eiko has learned an extra special ability to capture other sphinxes and evolve them!  It takes time and training, but if a sphinx lets her put them in a special capture gatcha she can spend some time 'evolving' them into a new form. After the evolution is complete she releases the sphinx back into freedom. She always releases them afterwards... promise.

ie. Pookawitch will take your sphinx and change them by adding traits, markings, possibly items, etc to get a different sphinx. This could be minor to huge depending on inspiration and randomness. If the sphinx is a 'mon sphinx' already, take heed that this will not nessicarily mean they will look like an expected 'next stage' mon and could be very different.

Note: The less traits a sphinx starts with, the easier it is to change them.

Who's that Sphinx?

There is a game played on Mon Island where the shadowed out form of a monster or sphinx is presented and the viewer needs to quickly and correctly guess who ore what that mystery creature is.

Occasionally an image will be shown of a shadowed-in sphinx. The first person to correctly guess that sphinx's name will win a prize! (Typically the prize will be a monster/pet of some sort.)

The shadowed image will include the full sphinx and their wardrobe, but not nessicarily their pets or other items, so they need to be guessed by sphinx alone.

4. Long Running Contests

NOTE: These prizes will not use up a gatcha capsule. 

When it comes to judging: Please realize that we are not art critics and that we shall try our best. It's difficult to choose between so many wonderful entries, and we already feel like villains for not being able to choose everybody that will enter.
So please do realize that if we choose one piece over another we're doing our best and probably will strain, stress and worry as we're even figuring out the top finalists, and usually we just go by what caught our attention the most. (also we never pick fast and put off judging because is soooo hard to pick!)

You may enter once per contest.

Entries must be in by March 19th (12 am EST)

Art Contest

Art of any medium, with the theme of the Sphinxes and 'Mons'.  For example this could be monified sphinxes, sphinxified mons, sphinxes with mon pets, or just mon pets.

Sometimes judging comes down to 'does it look like it could be from the Sphinxes adoptable or does it look like an anthro cat?' Its a trixy fine line! Pencil drawings, digital work, sculpture, whatever your ready to try! You MUST have made it yourself and it must have been made for this contest.

Make sure to sign your picture.

We do not accept, or condone, AI art.

Baking Contest

Bake/cook some wonderful treat! Something themed with Sphinxes and Mons. To enter show a picture of your final entry with a card/paper in the image with your username and 2024.  If you think it's needed, feel free to describe your choices and reasons for what you made and why you made it. You might wish to check out previous baking contests to see what Mr. Pooka and I tend to lean towards for choices... nothing set in stone but I think we are usually more impressed with flashy/pretty things, (ie. would prob. pick a cake shaped like a Sphinx over a traditional Egyptian bowl of hummus... although we are often surprised with the types of entries so you never know!)

Only enter your own work created for this contest. Pictures of the steps is awesome and helpful, but not required.

The prizes will have the same colouring and traits, but different ID numbers and possibly hair. Of course they may be customized more in the usual fashion (classes, wigs, refashionings, etc.)

These 'mon sphinxes' will be 'non-unique' so everybody has access to their favourite mon from the event. ^_^

Legendaries and a few very rare mons will not be put into this folder as an option, but are still considered 'non-unique' for other methods of acquiring them.

Eiko, a Kimono Girl from a Teahouse in another region has become Champion of Mon Island. To also gain the title you will need to collect 8 badges and defeat her in a mon battle.


Along with exploring the island she has travelled many regions and worlds collecting mon of varying types learning a curious ability to capture sphinxes, considered as mons in other worlds, in capsules. She then is able to 'evolve' them. She always releases them after they have been improved... promise.

I have some good descriptions but if you could add some details, say colours, I could add that information to my files and update our Mon Dex! I've got some spare capsules for anyone willing to help me out!
