Your phones are ringing. Answering it you find Professor Coconut in a conference call.
Professor Coconut: While what Professor Tamarisk studies and what I study may seem similar there are some deeper philosophical differences! While she is concerned with the Sphinxification of Mons, and the Monification of Sphinxes I like to dig right into all the grey areas and lasting effects of these processes. ...ah, I see some of you already getting lost in what I'm saying so lets give some examples! Sometimes a Monster appears on our Island and is transformed into a Sphinx. This effect is what Professor Tamarisk studies, details and works to understand. Now, that Mon who became a Sphinx is a totally different creature with different goals and a different life! It can get a job, grow a new hairstyle, get married and pass on some or all of it's traits to others in ways that were not possible where they originated from and that is what I study!
Perhaps an example. It's like this coconut. If you planted this coconut it would grow into a coconut palm and grow more coconuts. Pretty simple and really how things work on most monster worlds. Now, if I crack this coconut open, add some lime juice, perhaps some fresh mint and a few mango chunks and... there we go, a completely different thing, combined from mixing wildly different ingredients! No less interesting and infinitely variable... like Sphinxes! On most Mon worlds if an electric mouse breeds with a water mouse you will get either an electric mouse or a water mouse as a result. Here on Mon Island, and perhaps anywhere in the world of Sphinxes, you might get a mouse with one or both types of traits or occasionally something completely new!
Take my own traits for example. My tail almost certainly comes from a line of Electrical creatures and my ears are often seen on Psychic Mons, though it's also been seen on others... and my colours are also curiously like neither of the Mon lines that the traits originate from! I'm more coconut *the prof holds up his mixed drink, takes a sip* than coconut *the prof holds up a whole coconut*! ...and you can to! Oh, what did I put in here again? *takes a bigger sip and smiles* Yum!
Well, that's todays lesson. I'm sure you've got exploring and battling to get to but I've got to ponder some of my own studies and there's nowhere better to do that than the beach! Remember to have fun out there trainers!

Professor Coconut: "I myself study the mixture of mon traits on sphinxes."
