The fun reason is I kind of enjoy the mistakes... my own included. I think it's playful and fun, mistakes happen especially in a rush or with intentionally confusing rules.

...but the practical reason is that editing and deleting contest posts can be used as a form of cheating and while I can see that they have been edited and deleted I cannot tell what they used to contain. I'm certainly not accusing anyone of cheating at all, but that is the practical reason behind this particular rule, just so there are no questions later one about any contest entries.
