Just thought I'd share a bit of where I've been the last week or so lol. Wasn't completely sure where to put it, so sorry Pooka if its the wrong spot! It starts off quite sad so if you wish to skip, keep the spoiler closed. <3
The sad bit is here. A few months ago a stray cat showed up at my door. He was scruffy and dirty and skeletally thin. His little mouth was a little crooked, and he was frightened of people. He was also clearly in need of help so I decided to see if I could make him my friend. I never expected him to let me pet him. I was wrong. It took me weeks of feeding him and coaxing him, and then one day I was able to pet him. And then I could carry him around. Before long I gave him the name Captain Jack or just Jack for short.
Jack turned into the most loving cat I've ever had the pleasure to own. He was constantly purring and rubbing and wanting to be packed around. He was a total sweetheart, and I fell in love. Eventually I could resist no longer and I brought him inside. It was only once I got him inside that I realized just how bad of shape he was in. I took him to see a vet once I was sure he wouldn't be too scared. The vet estimated his age at 14 years and told me he had a host of health problems including being FIV positive. I had already given him some dewormer but I had a few other things taken care of, however it was obvious Jack would not be around for much longer.
'Much longer' turned out to be a week and a half. He lost the ability to excrete solids, and couldn't eat more than a few bites before he would vomit. He was constantly starving and unable to eat, and spend 99.9% of his time lying down because it hurt him to walk more than it hurt him to lie down. He had been unable to groom himself for a long time, so he was always filthy and he wouldn't let me wash him because he hated water. It took me another few days to admit to how bad he really was because I loved him so much, and I desperately wanted more time with him. But eventually I just couldn't bare to watch him living that way anymore. So just a few days ago I finally took him to the vet one final time and did my best to say goodbye.
The house had never felt more empty to me. I have gotten over the worst of the crying but I don't think I'll ever be fully over his loss. I'd always heard how fast people fall in love when they adopt an elderly cat. I never really believed it til it happened to me. If I could have made him young again so I could keep him around, I would have in a heartbeat. I was completely heartbroken and I knew of only one thing that might make it a little easier.
I scoured Craigslist and the paper looking for ads for kittens. I found several, but one just caught my eye. There were no pictures, but it said siamese female, 8 weeks. I haven't owned a siamese since 2014, but it seemed like a match made in heaven so I emailed. The ad had been up a few days but I figured it was worth a shot. Lo and behold, they still had the kitten! So the next day I went down to pick her up and I was surprised to find what might be the most beautiful kitten in the world.
That's us on the way home.
That's her a few hours after getting home, having claimed my bed as her own and named me her bringer of foods and toys. She is 8 weeks old and quite a handful! Turns out she is a tortie point, and I expect her to be pretty fluffy for a mese like her father was but we shall see. Meanwhile we're navigating kitten learning experiences. Her name is Zelda, after the princess, and she's already decided I have to share my bed since the one I got for her is apparently not quite good enough. XD
