Dancing after dark

Dusk had fallen and the moon was slowly rising as Aurora slowly walked into the park.
The grass felt cool under her feet as she padded across to one of the large flat slabs on the other side.
Sitting on the still warm stone she waited for her partner to turn up. But she had a feeling she would be late. Sagira was never one for her time keeping.
Sighing to herself she started stretching the muscles in her legs getting ready for their nightly practice.


Sagira panted slightly as she ran through the darkening streets to reach the park but at last she could see the edge of the park. Slowing to catch her breath she padded softly through the park stopping briefly at the fountain and having a quick drink.
Carrying on she soon spotted her friend stretching off to one side.
Padding over quickly she smiled.
"Evening Aurora. ready to practice?"
"You took your time I'm all ready warmed up." Aurora said with a chuckle flexing the muscles in her legs.
"Ok then what should i sing tonight? something fast or slow?"
"I think slow tonight. we've been working hard on the faster more up beat songs so lets try a slow one to keep us on are toes." Aurora said with a smile moving from the stone slab to the grass.

Sagira nodded sitting comfortable pondering what song she could sing.
Nodding to Aurora she started to hum a few long soft notes before she started singing softly
"Last night I dreamed again that I was by your side,

Aurora slowly started to move to her voice slowly twisting and turning in time with the words. Though their was no real music to dance to she loved how Sagira could sing. It had been by chance they had met and even more luck that they had decided to form this partnership.
Both had dreams of becoming dancers and entertainers. And although Sagira could sing she wasn't very agile and Aurora though very agile could not sing.
As the song speed up for the chorus Aurora moved to just her back to legs making the same movements she had before but being on her back legs made it look more impressive.

"When the summer winds begin to blow,
That is when I will be sailing to my home,
To the olive trees and the golden corn
That whispers in the fields up in the hills beyond the place
where I was born,"

The whole word seemed to fade away while they practiced but it a was fun way to work.

Nourbese had decided to spend some time in the park and enjoy the quite night for a bit. Normally she loved the noise and excitement of the court, her postilion calling for her to be ready at a moments notice to dance while the court ate, or just took a break from their duties.

But tonight she had needed to escape, one of the old scribes had insulted her and while he had been thrown out of the palace for his crude language Nourbese had needed to escape and find a quieter calmer place were the court gossips could not reach.

She had found a quite spot in the park and curled up to simply enjoy the night when she heard voices. When someone began to sing she perked her ears and getting to her feet quietly made her way to were the song came from. Sekani scuttled along after her surprisingly quit for such an energetic creature.

The moonlight reflected off of the pelt of the dancer shimmering off of her coat while the voice of the other rose and fell in a soothing rhythm. Nourbese sighed in contentment as she watched the two peasants happy for once to be able to appreciate the dance and song rather then be the one preforming. She loved to dance, but it wasn't always easy to enjoy it as much when she knew very well how unsavory some of her audience was.

Sagira continued singing happily as Aurora danced until she opened her eyes.
Suddenly her voice faltered as she forgot the words to the song and she stuttered slightly.

The sudden change in the singing threw off Aurora's movements slightly but she caught herself, Falling forward gracefully she landed gently on all fours.
"Sagira you were just getting to the good bit." she moaned at her friend "i was totally lost in the music"

Hanging her head Sagira blushed "I'm sorry but i saw someone watching."

Aurora sighed softly putting a paw on her shoulder. She knew the only thing that was stopping her from becoming a singer was her stage fright. She loved to sing but when she saw someone watching she froze like a deer in the hunters lamplight.
Looking around Aurora tried to spot their audience.
It was Aurora's turn to blush as she saw who it was.
Though she did not know her name she had managed to see her dance when she'd help her mentor, Masae the scribe, take scrolls from the main Library to the high court. Her dancing was amazing and ,though she wouldn't admit it, she was her idol. The one who had inspired her to start dancing.
And she had been watching.

When Nourbese realized she had been spotted she laughed softly and lept from were she was hiding landing with an almost instinctual grace in front of them she smiled at the two peasants and said "Pardon my intrusion, it is a rare treat for me to get to enjoy someone else's singing and dancing."

Sekani scuttled from the bushes rushing right up to the two startled girls he stood on his hind legs and looked back and forth between them for a bit before turning to scamper to Nourbese's side.

Aurora stuttered slightly "it's no intrusion at all. We didn't know anyone else was here."
Out of habit Aurora started stroking her tail nervously wondering at what to say next.

Suddenly a small creature ran out from the bushes and looked at them before darting back towards the dancers side.

Two ruby eyes watched the little creature and suddenly bounded forward playfully.

"Eirian!" Sagira called trying to get her to come back. But her silver tabby bounded across to play with this new little creature not listening to her.

Nourbese blinked as the silver tabby bound forward playfully. She giggled as Sekani stood up on his hind legs and after studying the cat for a moment darted forward in a playful manner. '

"Oh thats okay Sekani likes cats quite a bit...and at least he hasn't swiped anything from one yet." Nourbese said the last bit trailing off as she eyed the jewelry on the cat and hoping that Sekani would behave himself.

Eirian stopped and tilted her head as this strange little thing ran forward. Normally thing ran from her not to her. Watching it approach she took it's gesture as play happily bounding forward mock pouncing them mewing happily.
Sagira let out a sigh as she watched Eirian try and play ~At least she not trying to eat him~ she though to herself. Looking at the Lady in front of her she smiled a bit.
"I'm Sagira and he silver cat is my Eirian." glancing at her still shocked partner she added quickly "My dance partner is Aurora."

Aurora shot a quick glance at Sagira before turning back to the dancer in front of them.
"It's nice to meet you. I'm not really a dancer. though I do practice I'm not good yet" she babbled out a bit quickly slightly embraced.

Nourbese smiled as she watched Sekani play with the cat Eirian. She corrected her thoughts so that she matched the name with the cat. Looking up she smiled and said "I am called Nourbese and my friend here is Sekani."

Noticing Aurora embarrassment she shook her head and said "Not at all! It was quit nice, as I said it has been a while since I got the chance to enjoy watching a dance. Most of the time I am the one on the stage and while I love my job and would trade it for nothing I do miss being able to watch someone else take up the steps of the art."
