Tabletop Roleplaying all the way with Pooka, (-8 Like Pooka mentioned above, all of our fantasy rp (and every other genre, space opera, high and low fantasy, modern, anime, western, post apocalyptic... and whatever we want to incorporate) is run with Pathfinder 1e (which evolved from 3.5). We incorporate a lot of other systems into pathfinder rules fairly easily. I can run a game from virtually any system in pathfinder without needing a conversion these days. I love older versions of D&D but Pathfinder 1E is the best for us. ...that being said we use the pathfinder RULES but not some of the implied system. Personally I believe the obsession with 'game balance' is the enemy of original and good storytelling.
D&D 5E is a pretty good starting point for someone looking to get into RP, but I personally think it is to simple. It is essentially an extremely simplified version of 3.5/pathfinder. I don't mean that as an insult... its sort of like how some systems use a 'lite' system to get people started before adding all the various details. ...it also does have some eloquent fixes to 3.5 which I've retro fitted with some simple backwards compatibility. (some super simple ways to fix the system they already had, but they tossed the whole thing, like tossing the baby out with the bathwater... and I feel the same goes for pathfinder 2E). I still to think D&D 5E is pretty good though and does provide a nice system to learn and enjoy roleplaying, (-8
While we use pathfinder as our rule base we do delve into a few other game settings using pf rules, like Rifts... and I've run games from Call of Cthulhu, D&D, and tons more.
Our second Roleplaying rule system is White Wolf... Vampire, werewolf, changeling and the rest. This is an other really nice system and works really well for the setting and player creature types. This is another company that tanked after they tried a second edition, rebooting the rules and setting. They have recently attempted a comeback but botched that pretty bad as a company. The original system has hundreds of books and is just as great now as it was then. They did license there stuff to Onyx Path and many of their books are actually really good. Play a Vampire or Werewolf or other supernatural monster of Darkness. Most of these games are meant for Adults, not like D&D at all. It deals with mature themes and horror. Changeling the Dreaming was the lightest and most playful setting but it was still and allegory for losing the joy and wonder of youth and various degrees of mental illness.
Outside of roleplaying Runescape is the main mmo type game I play. It has a great sense of humor, fun setting and huge world to play in along with a vast array of skills to work on. It can also be a wonderful time waster... you can endlessly challenge yourself to work on skills with ridiculous limits just to say you did... I used to reccomend it a bit more when it had a java client because it was so very non-intensive you could run it on a computer from the 90s... but really even the new stuff is a pretty lite system. I also like that Runescape also supports lots of different types of players... lots of mmos are just sort of one thing... fighting, pvp, story, social... but you can kind of do all of these things in Runescape while not feel like your missing out by not doing the other things. Some players work like crazy just to get good at noncombat skills, some hunt monster spawns endlessly, some just quest for the story...
Also if anyone ever gets into this one I can help you out there, (-8
I've also got a bunch of games in my 'really want to play' pile that I just haven't found the time for... Final Fantasy Online, Fire Emblem, Atelier, gah, and so many more!
There's also lots of games I've played a ton of but am not playing atm, like DDO, and Sims 2... oh how I loved Sims 2... so many hours recreating our RP characters to watch them walking around and interacting...
...I feel like I'm forgetting some things... I'm sure I'll be back, (-8
oh, and I recently did stumble upon a lot of D&D lol cats... which are almost topical, (-8
