With everyone in various forms of lock-downs and quarantines I wanted to share something that I find very fun and fulfilling that also happens to be a very valuable skill to have in these times of restricted travel, empty store shelves and food uncertainty.
Sprouting!
Sprouting seeds and grains and legumes etc has several benefits. It can make food you already have more nutritious. It can stretch your pantry. It can add variety to a limited food store. Sprouts are an awesome super food. You can sprout with home made equipment and don't need to buy any special gear. Sprouting only takes a couple minutes a day. Most things that you can sprout are some of the cheapest things you can buy at the grocery (where as the sprouts they sell are expensive in comparison and very limited in variety). It can give you something to do! It's like gardening without needing a garden or even a window.
There are a TON of different kinds of things you can sprout and there are several ways you can sprout stuff and tools to do it. There is also a ton if info online if you are curious about something I'm not demonstrating, (-8 Most things you sprout are pretty easy. ...a few involve extra steps, like Mung Beans... (which you have probably eaten if you don't recognize the name. Mung Beans are the beans used in common Bean Sprouts.)
So I started sprouting following the instructions on a website called Sprout People. Sprouts!
I got to this website because I bought their sprouting kit. Sprouter I actually bought the kits on ebay for cheap and honestly you don't need to buy anything... you can use lots of different containers you prob have at home!
The Sprout People have EXCELLENT videos that explain how to sprout things! I love the guy who makes them, he is repetitive and goes through every step... I kind of find watching him make sprouts is like watching Bob Ross paint a happy little bush.
Beans and Lentils
Seeds
So, to get started, I'm doing two different batches of Sprouts, some of the easiest things you can Sprout! In cup number one I'm sprouting some simple Green Lentils. Green Lentils are super simple, super cheap and are very yummy! You don't need to buy any special type of lentils, these are just the same lentils you buy dried in bags as the grocery store. You can eat them raw by themselves, in a salad or anywhere you want something green. You can also cook them just like you'd cook other lentils but with more nutrition. You can add them as a filler into anything from bread to meatloaf to stuffing to soup.
Almost all lentils are sprouted the exact same way some grow a little faster or slower and they do vary in flavour a bit. You can't mess up the time you take to sprout lentils, though you will prob find your 'sweet spot' where you like to stop growing them and even that can vary if you are using them for various reasons. This seems like a lot of info on Lentils but all of it is just saying how easy it is, nothing tricky and you can't mess it up!
In cup number two I'm sprouting a mix of two types of seeds I mixed myself, half mustard and half fenugreek. These are just seeds I bought in the grocery store in the spice section. You don't need to order anything special for sprouting. (though there are lots of yummy seeds you won't find in the spice section if you are getting experimental!) Mustard sprouts are a little spicy and fenugreek is sort of sweet and I like the mix (as well as the super cheapness of the seeds themselves!). They are great in salads and sandwiches and soups and as a side. They could be a salad themselves, but personally I'd find them a bit strong. I'm sure most people know what mustard seeds are so I won't go into detail. You have probably eaten fenugreek even if you've never heard about it before. Fenugreek extract is used to make Maple Syrup Artificial Flavour. ...anything you've eaten (Maple Syrup flavoured Oatmeal, Table syrup, cookies etc.) that says Maple Syrup Flavour without saying it contains Maple Syrup is actually Fenugreek. The seeds themselves have a very Maple-y smell.
To start I'm using one cup of Green Lentils in cup number one. I'm using 3 tablespoons of seeds (half mustard, half fenugreek).
and here's my cups! You can use lots of other things though, and I'd be happy to help if you want to try using something else from mason jars to yogurt containers.
Step number one was to rinse me seeds and lentils. The cups I have make this super easy.
Step Number two is to soak our seeds and lentils for 12 hours, I'm set up to go overnight.
I'm doing these instructions 'live' as I grow the sprouts so I'll post more pictures and instructions and tips and observations as I go, (-8 I'm also going to sprout more things after this first group... I've got the supplies to do more but sprouts don't last forever so I'm only making batches in the sizes that we will eat and use. I love garbanzo/chickpeas and I've tried different seeds and lentils types that were all good. I'll also do some experiemnts with stuff I've never sprouted for fun... I've got some ancient mung beans that'll be fun to see if they've got some life still in them!
If anyone has any questions totally ask away, and if anyone wants to join it I'd love to see pics or hear how things are going, (-8 Even if its just me I hope seeing some daily sprout growth will be a bit more exciting then watching grass grow, (-8
