Community Cooking for Fun and Sharing!
Right up front I should mention that this is all for fun and sharing and community, just like in the title. There's no secret hidden games or anything just a chance for some of us to show off a bit or share some love, thoughts, ideas, solutions and recipes with each other. I think the majority of Sphinx stalkers enjoy cooking or baking as well as sharing. I also think that 100% of us also eat. (-8 (If I'm wrong I sooo want to know about it!) So, here is what I'm proposing...
In order to have a bit of fun with this and give everyone something to look forward to I was thinking that we could all share a picture (or a ton of pictures!) on this upcoming Sunday of things we have cooked, baked or made. While we are all on different schedules, with some locked down, some working, some on pajama day 21 and whatever situation you find yourself in, setting up a specific day for cooking might have been tricky. Picking the same kind of food to cook might also have been tricky, besides the usual of dietary restrictions, may of us are experiencing some shopping issues and finding ingredients has become a challenge. There is also a variety of cooking skills and experience to think of. So the goal is really to just have fun and show off some food. I picked a Specific day (Sunday) to show of the results because it'll give us a bit more of a time frame for virtual gathering... an actual date to look forward too!
If you are interested in this share some fun pictures with us here on Sunday! There is no other requirements or rules or anything like that. Have fun making instagramable set shots or maybe show some blurry assembly/process pics, its all good! Share some recipes, or some quarantine solutions that work for you. Mention something challenging you are trying and see if anyone wants to try the same... or add your own suggestions!
If this ends up being fun, perhaps we'll keep having some picture posts on upcoming Sundays (-8
...and until Sunday gets here feel free to share your own cooking thoughts or ideas or recipes here! (and feel free to drop cool recipes into our older Recipe Thread as well! There are some wonderful treasures there that have entered into our permanent menu, like Hedges fruit cobbler, yum!)

...and what will I be working towards? For Sunday I am hoping to show off some bread from yeast I've made myself. While I'm well stocked with traditional yeast, I'm really excited about experimenting with some of the cool methods I've seen floating around the internet lately!
I have grown my own sourdough in the past but at the time it became to much work to maintain and I only used it for about a month...
Now I haven't decided yet but I'm going to try two methods eventually, but start with one. Either the dried fruit yeast method or the potato method... I'll prob go with the fruit because I feel it'll be a bit more reliable. If anyone is interested in either of these just ask and I'll add some links and ideas, (-8
..and not quite a recipe, I'm also soaking some (very old) black chick peas to see if I can get some more chick pea sprouts, yum!

Oh, also I've been experimenting with some different flours. I've got bread currently rising... it is fairly traditional except I've been cutting in some of my lesser used flours to make sure I don't run out. Today's bread has a half cup of rice flour mixed in but so far it looks lovely and doesn't seem to be lacking the needed glutton...
While I was looking at suggestions I did also turn up lots of yeast free rice flour breads for anyone looking for gluten free or alt options. Some looked pretty yummy, (-8 but I don't have any experience making it yet...
also I have a handful of yeast free quick bread recipes if anyone wants them. My fave is one called 'Early American Brown Bread' in my cookbook that is lovely! ...I just don't have any whole wheat flour atm or I'd make some!

I've got yeast hopefully growing in my sugar/fruit jar! So excited to try this out...
and I've fallen in love with adding just a bit of rice flour to my usual bread! It's turned out so awesome by accident... I really just meant to use up some extra flour and stretch my wheat flour but the rice flour has been awesome!

I've still got a couple of ideas I want to try... but I'm not sure if my experiment in fruit water yeast will be ready on time... we'll see though, (-8 So far I feel like I'm just making some cold fruit tea... hopefully my patience holds out, (-8

Well, I don't have pictures, but I did try to make a rice tortilla thing. I didn't have rice flour so tried to make my own. It was parboiled rice and 'cooked' instantly as I added the warm water >< And I couldn't get a fine consistency. So it tasted like normal rice with a different texture. I did 1 cup of rice and tried to use the processor. Added almost a cup of warm water, a bit of salt and a bit of olive oil. Used a sandwich baggie and deconstructed it..took a spoonful and made thin pancakes. Its easy to separate them because its on sandwich baggie. Tried to cook them in a pan...they mostly fell apart. Some were intact. It was like normal rice with a different texture and a bit of a crisp. Ill try it again with actual rice flour once I can get it again

I love experimenting in the kitchen MA. I've got a bag of sweet rice just sitting there waiting for me to have the time and patience to turn it into mochi from scratch, (-8
I've got a bit to much rice flour, to bad we are not closer...

I've got a few things I wanted to share! Over the week I've made bread a few times, (-8 Since I mentioned earlier (was it above or elsewhere?) I wanted to stretch my flour a bit so I was using some of my other flours to cut in a bit... with the intention of using small amounts so I didn't really notice. ...but I accidentally hit on using a bit of rice flour in my bread and it became a hit around here. I usually make two loves of bread at the same time, like this... and here's the same loaves rising... you can see they are whiter than normal? idk if the light helps.. So for these two loaves I use 4 cups of flour but I've been replacing about a half of wheat flour with rice flour. ...and just that small amount switchins things up quite a bit. The bread comes out much softer, including the crust. (which Pooka extra loves for sandwiches) They do look a wee bit paler when finished. They might be a bit structurally weaker as well? They might not hold up if you were being rough with it... like lots of flipping in a grilled cheese or super heavy dagwood sandwiches but that's just a guess. The toast lovely and are just extra yum. Idk if its the texture or what but I've just really been enjoying them! Here's pic from another pair of loaves, (-8 I love making bread, (-8 Oh, some people ask.. I use cornmeal under my bread. It keeps the bread from sticking to the pan, is super cheap and adds a bit of flavour to! You can use it a bunch of times as well if you like... it gets a bit toastier every use though and eventually you'll want some more. ..but a little goes a long way, costing a super fraction of even the cheapest oil for example... Next up I just took these out of the oven! ...they smell sooooo goood... I was going to make something different for variety (I made some of these last month and showed pics as well!) but Pooka requested them, (-8 and she is irresistible to me, (-8 The recipe I used is in the other thread, with the only dif being I made the dough part in my breadmaker, without changing any of the ingredients. Lastly I didn't get to what I challenged myself to make! I really wanted to try making yeast water from dried fruit... but it doesn't seem to be starting. Perhaps I'm not patient enough! Just made... three days later... I'm just getting a few bubbles... but perhaps it'll still go! I do have a theory that I might have sabotaged myself... I read that some dried fruits will have an inhibitor added to kill the yeast on them. So, I figured I'd use a selection! (apricot, date, two kinds of raisin, current, and cranberry) That way, I figured something has to take right? ...but maybe if one of them had something to prevent yeast, when I mixed them all up the same thing killed all of my mixed yeast. Just a theory, but I'll see in few days, (-8 If it doesn't start after a week I'm going to try the potato method, (-8 though I've watched a bunch of videos on other kinds of fruit yeast water I want to try now to, (-8

Adding rice will do that. Theres no gluten to add chew. But it actually tastes really similar to wheat flour to me so its my main go to....when I have it in stock xD
For it to darken you need to add a protien like an eggwash. Umm...what else? They say its best to have a combination of flours because they do different things but that's iffy to me because I can taste certain things and...yeah.
Still--that bread looks awesome! We checked for yeast today but there was none. When im able to get it im SO making cinnamon buns! (well..they aren't rolled but same thing).

Those cinnamon rolls look heavenly! 😍
I made and impromptu dump cake the other day. I don’t remember if I ever posted a recipe in the share thread or not. But swapped a bunch of ingredients we didn’t have and got a little creative with flavors.
Was planning to make some banana bread today, but have been dealing with a situation behind scenes that’s more appropriate for the pillow fort. Heh. All in all, I loved this shared day of baking and I’m so glad others got to stick to their plans. 😊

I'm definitely going for a second round of this, (-8 Anyone is welcome to post a pic on Sunday if they have the time or energy or can find the supplies!
So... the fruit water was a bust. It bubbled a little and I was hopeful, but then I got a bit of mold and we were done. Potato water is the next trick I want to try, (-8 (though I'm still hopeful about some kind of fruit water yeast!)
If that doesn't pan out then I'll stick to some tried and true quick breads, like a soda bread. I just read an interesting recipe for peanut butter bread as well that I want to give a shot, (-8 (It looked like banana bread, but with peanut butter... i don't see how that could be bad!)
