Heb-Bastet means 'Bastet Festival'

On the April 15th we celebrate a month long festival dedicated to Bastet.

All are invited to attend the Heb-Bastet, noble or peasant, sphinx, netjer or whatever you are. It shall be a time of merriment, selling of wares, jokes, eating, drinking, and of course the reverence towards the nefer netjer (good goddess) Bastet!

Ii-wy, welcome to the Sixteenth Annual Heb~Bastet Sphinx Celebration!

Those of you who attended the previous festivals may remember me, and for the newcomers I shall introduce myself: I am Sahret and along with Selene IV am a hostess of the festival.  This year I've heard rumours of trading ships heading towards the West. Hopefully they'll bring back some interesting goods before the end of the Heb.

Selene IV:    

Selene IV lounged in her beachside chair and sipped her milky drink from it's coconut cup while watching ships preparing to leave for adventure. Of course she had her own agent already mixed in and on the hunt for curious new boys but during the Heb~Bastet that's where her interests stopped! She had enough experience to see that the dangers and ridiculous hijinks often mis-associated with the festival of her great Goddess had attached itself to those foolhardy adventurers. She thought fondly of this years upcoming festival with dreams of dancing and ritual and boy sales and parities and all the other delights of the senses that lay ahead, far removed from chaos and mayhem. She smiled and nodded as the fleet set out and even waved a paw as they sailed past. She lounged a touch longer enjoying the early days sun, but did notice a couple of pirate ships sneak out of the harbour mere hours after the fleet... Oooo, Drama she thought! She looked forward to hearing all about it... AFTER her Heb festivities!

~ No editing contest/auction posts for any reason. (If you think you made a mistake try and repost!)

~ The end time of auctions and timed contests are the very last possible second on the minute posted. For example if a contest/auction ends at 2:30 PI time then the very last post that can be accepted is 2:30:59. (a few more detailed auction rules are always posted with auctions to make everything easy to understand and very clear!)

~ Sometimes a game rule will break the regular rules for fun but should be very clear (such as a contest for the first post with a specific time or a note about being able to edit until the contest ends).

~ ALL of our contests and games are meant to provide fun and enjoyment! Don't worry or stress about a certain type of game, there will be lots of variety and something for everyone, (-8

A Request and Reminder

We would ask that you please think of the Heb threads as a fun party and try not to bring down the mood. It's meant to be a safe/fun place where we can leave the stress of real life behind. (Think of it like going into a birthday party, everybody is singing 'happy birthday', they're about to cut the cake... and you bring up something sad/upsetting and ruin the mood.) A lot people people come to these threads to escape real life and have fun, and tend to leave when they see the mood being dragged down.

It's not that we don't care! We do care and know that this is a good community to confide in for help/support, but if you do need this please post in a different thread in the Sphinxes General Forums, that's what it's there for. ^_^

3. Traditional Long Running Contests

When it comes to judging: Please realize that we are not art critics and that we shall try our best. It's difficult to choose between so many wonderful entries, and we already feel like villains for not being able to choose everybody that will enter.
So please do realize that if we choose one piece over another we're doing our best and probably will strain, stress and worry as we're even figuring out the top finalists, and usually we just go by what caught our attention the most. (also we never pick fast and put off judging because is soooo hard to pick!)

There can only be one entry, per contest, per person (not account).
PM your entries to Mr. Pooka with the message titled with the name of the contest (ie. if you are entering the art contest send a pm with the title 'Art Contest') (...also I don't always look at contest entries until we set up for judging so if you have a question feel free to either post it in this thread or PM it.)

Some years we don't have enough entries for all of the prizes, so don't be shy, go ahead and enter!

Entries must be in by May 20th  (12 am EST)

Note: Everybody who enters one of these contests (win or lose) will be put into a draw for an exceptional job upgrade voucher. If you enter both contests you will receive two entries for the draw.

Sometimes judging comes down to 'does it look like it could be from the Sphinxes adoptable or does it look like an anthro cat"? Its a trixy fine line! Pencil drawings, digital work, sculpture, whatever your ready to try! You MUST have made it yourself and it must have been made for this contest.

Cooking/Baking Contest

Bake/cook some wonderful treat! Something themed with Star Nation. (Or any other thing this year that may pop up. )To enter show a picture of your final entry with a card/paper in the image with your username, 2023, and a tiny doodle of a cat. :3 (As detailed or as quickly done as you wish. ) If you think it's needed, feel free to describe your choices and reasons for what you made and why you made it.  You might wish to check out previous Heb contests to see what Mr. Pooka and I tend to lean towards for choices... nothing set in stone but I think we are usually more impressed with flashy/pretty things,   (ie. would prob. pick a cake shaped like a Sphinx over a traditional Egyptian bowl of hummus... although we are often surprised with the types of entries so you never know!)

Stray Cats

Sahret: Hey hekenmess, hello friends. Bastet has deemed to bless us with sacred cats who are roaming around Ahket.

About the Stray Cats


During the Heb~Bastet, at the Temple of Bastet, stray cats are seen to wander around. These cats already have a name, and if they hear their name said they will come forth to be with the person who 'called' them.
If there are stray cats in an event there will be a warning at the top of the thread letting you know.
Ie: *Stray cats have been seen around this event/thread*

If there are stray cats in a thread, and you happen to say their name (sometimes they're in another language and their meaning will pull them out) during your posting, the cat will respond and come to you. It can be made a pet for your sphinx, or kept to wait for when you have a sphinx to care for it.

Basically it is a 'secret word' game. (A word search to check the threads that have stray cats in them.)



Stray Cat Rules
~ It will be announced in a thread when a certain artist's stray cats are around, and another note posted when that artist has finished their game (ie. not watching the thread any longer).

~ Only 1 stray cat from each artist can be won per person for the 'secret word' games. (this does not include cats won from other events, just the 'secret word' stray cat game.)

~ Spelling matters! Since a program is being used to find the word posted, if the word is miss-spelled it will be overlooked. So, to be fair - spelling counts.

~ Please note that this is supposed to be in the event of a 'normal post'. So no posts of just name lists in an attempt to call over a cat.

~ Editing posts is fine, but no going back to edit a post after cats have been won in an attempt to make it seem as if you had posted that word first. After the page has the word search completed and winners announced, any edits just to make it seem as if you said the winning name/word before the page was searched will disqualify you.

~ There are other artists with stray cats, and another list of names - with each of us not pre-knowing the names the other was using. So there could be repeats of words/names

~Although some names have many meanings, there is a pre-chosen, exact word that is being used for the cats in this game.
(Ie. A cat could be named 'Sebyet', which is Khemetic for 'teacher', and the word 'teacher' would bring out that cat.)

5. Important Notes from Mr. Pooka

Rules and Comments

Naming.

Deed names are common as are names from tribal languages. (this of course is appropriate for this particular RP setting,
but of course Star Nation Peoples can travel to and from other lands and can follow any naming convention you wish and also
we do have a lot of magic/portals/time travel and more in our setting so names like Jason and Amanda are also perfectly fine
if it suits your RP needs.)

There are some names that are not allowed;

No stupid naming conventions like you might find in an 80s comedy (or the kind that would make actors walk off a set offended).
To be clear on this one, a name can still be meant as entertaining or light hearted as in a characters personality but just
not directly meant as a joke.

No naming Sphinxes after famous Indigenous people. (ex. no Geronimos, Crazy Horses or Sitting Bulls...)

Many Native languages are a great resource for naming but a few do have Naming Rules and Conventions, such as some West Coast
Tribes (particularly the Tlingit) which keep certain names in their own families and claim them as their own.
Basically, not that anyone of our awesome people need this warning, but just please don't go out of your way to find a
troublesome name or something that might offend a certain tribe.

Many of the names we are using, are in English for us and assumed to be in the Sphinxes own native tongue. For example if your character was named 'Mountain Mouse' you could simply (and most easily for most English speakers) use Mountain Mouse for your name. You are also welcome to use translated versions of the name, such as Wajiwan Waabiganoojii (Ojibway)... but keep in mind that not all tribes followed the same types of naming conventions if you are going for authenticity. Naming a character Potato Soup might sound cool in Cree, but everyone will still look at you like your name is Potato Soup.

We are running a speculative fiction version of these lands obviously inspired by the Tribes of First Nations, Indigenous
and Native peoples of the Americas. That being said, you may not use any real tribes name (such as Cree, Apache or Ojibway)
on your cert with a single exception; that you belong to that tribe and participate in it's community.

Why do we have so many Rules about this particular setting?

Most of our settings up to this point are based on long gone cultures or time periods way beyond the possibility of hurting
anyone's feelings. There have been exceptions though and when we do them we do go our of our way to ensure it's something
we should do! For example we made a Shrine Maiden class based upon Japanese Shinto Priestess which have not changed much in
hundreds of years and are still around today representing the faiths of may Japanese people... that being said, as a collective
culture Japan does not hold back when it comes to using their own interesting history, faiths and jobs when it comes to
entertainment and a Shrine Maiden is an integral piece of faithfully recreating many many Anime settings from every genre
which is what we were going for.

Many Native Tribes are still around today and are real people who have endured centuries of abuse since the day
Columbus darkened these shores with his long evil shadow. Robbed, enslaved, swindled, starved and worse, todays native
peoples have had everything taken from them.
There culture, faith and ways of life were targeted for eradication. They were driven from their homelands
and forced into worst scraps of land available to starve. Even their cloths and language were outlawed.
Thousands of books, websites and other resources have been written on the topic of you need
or want to know more but please take my word that Native peoples have had enough abuse that we'll not add to if even if the
most minor tiny corner of the internet.

I'll also note that some early authors and a LOT of Hollywood movies have also done a great deal of damage in the form of
vilifying and stereotyping Native Cultures, something we are specifically striding to avoid. There are still Heroes and
villains in our setting but that is because Native peoples are humans. The villains are bad because they are bad not
just because they are Native. (Mr. Pooka, who grew up before there was an internet actually played outside with friends,
yes that was a thing just ask your discord friends. I was of an age were I often played the classic Cowboys and Indians...
but the difference of who were the 'good guys' and who were the 'bad guys' changed depending on which group of friends
I played with...)

I'll also add one personal note. I am loathe to have anyone tell me what I can and cannot like, roleplay, draw etc. Our rules
and notes above are meant as 'best practises' and for making everyone comfortable in our forums and public spaces. If your
own roleplays (including stories in your character profiles) want to delve into different areas we've limited above,
you are always welcome to go for it (and you don't need me to tell you that!). If I had any advice though it would be to
do some research and use it as an opportunity to learn something new and awesome, (-8

Adding our own Sphinxes setting touches

Obviously we're working in a fantasy setting with wizards, dragons, vampires and all that good stuff so of course we're adding
these into options for the Star Nations! Some of our options are based on real world mythologies and some are purely fictional.
Some options are also made for creative setting reasons. Here's some examples.

Gender/Sex roles - Many jobs, professions and activities were gender locked throughout history but is changing in the real
world, varies from tribe to tribe, and has evolved and changed over years. We may still add our own gender locked
versions of classes for our own roleplaying/setting vibe. Of course this does not invalidate
any traditional roles and if you wish to create your own RPs and stories in order to deal with these struggles or maintain
a 'closer to real world history' or 'build your own fantasy culture' story we always leave extra lands and areas left open to add your own clans or tribes
for your RPing and storytelling creativity!


Where is the Shaman Class? - Sooooo... first let me simply say there is no such thing. Shaman is not a word native to any
of the peoples of the Americas. Also, 'Indian Shaman' has been way to overused as a reductive grouping of all First Nations
faiths, beliefs and mysticism. ...all that being said, some faiths and believes among some nations does incorporate
what we now collectively call shamanism but for now it seems best to avoid the title as a job class if for no other reason
than to provide everyone an opportunity to learn more about the vast and diverse beliefs from both the Real World and our
Star Nation. Just like the real world there is worship, relations and understandings of Spirits, Ancestors, and Gods in many
variations as well as plenty of other types of faiths and beliefs. There may be popular shared believes amongst many, but
there is no unified religion in the Star Nation. (we might change our mind on the Shaman title in the future, just not now.)
There are Shamans in other parts of the world, and even in our real world, and some tribes or individuals use the word Shaman now
but when the characters arrive in the Star Nation it is not a word used by anyone... time and roleplaying will probably change this.



Terminology

Popular and accepted terms come and go. There is no current unified term to encompass all the peoples of what is now known
as the Americas. Indigenous People is usually your best bet if you need to refer to a collective group of First Nations,
Metis or Inuit Peoples, but really most people prefer to be called by their own tribal names. Except for historical reference
and some proper nouns, Indian and Eskimo are right out and should not be usually be used. When in doubt simply ask who you
are talking to!

Unlike the real world we'll be using the collective term of Star Nation which represents that majority of peoples (both Sphinxes
and other sapient life) from many tribes, though there are still people out there who are not and do not plan on joining.



Lastly for now, the Golden Rule

If something feels wrong we're not gonna do it. Period. No loopholes or notes anywhere else's will change that!

What feels right for us comes from our own experiences, education, friendships and my own Metis community. Your mileage may vary,
but our goal is to have an amazing and fun setting inspired by an incredible collection of cultures that absolutely have their
place here beside our magicians, knights and samurai. While clearly a fantasy setting we do hope to share some fun history
and cultural lessons along the way!

way I look at the people of the world, (-8

If you'd like some fun real world references from the Pookas, here goes! Mr. Pooka is Woodland Metis which is my cultural
identity. Though my Indigenous ancestry comes from the Cree, I have been educated more by my Metis and Ojibwa teachers.
I've trained as a Firekeeper and have tended sacred fires at events including a Metis Rendezvous/Pow Wow and spiritual gatherings
including Sweat Lodges and a Vision Quest ceremony overseen in the Ojibway ways. I've learned to make some sacred medicines
and learned most of the local plant life where I live. I've spent plenty of time learning from Elders and specialists in both
Metis and Ojibway teachings (as well as guest teachings from others at Pow Wows and Rendezvous).
I also used to sing in a Big Drum group regularly and even one an award at a Metis Gathering once!
I also of course aced my First Nations Studies in Social Service Worker College, (-8
Pooka also participated in a Mixed Metis/Ojibway Drumming group and worked with many Elders and experienced teachers learning
spiritual Ojibway rituals and healing rites, from Ojibway teachers. She also took several Native Arts classes in Art College
and has made her own drums, moccasins and leather crafts among other Indigenous art pieces.
We also have had many Indigenous friends and teachers including but not limited to, Local Elders, a ritual specialist who
had danced the Sun Dance all four times, a friend who would rather play a Samurai RPG character, a wise older Metis man who
taught me a secret way to find great fishing spots and a woman who spent time working as a Hostess in Japan...
There is no specific Indigenous mould!

6. the Star Nation

Star Nation


The majority of tribes that live on the land of the great Turtle are a part of the Star Nation as are a few from beyond.
Each Tribe is as a star, some are large and bright, some are small or sometimes hidden. Some move slowly across the sky
and some flare brightly in short lived but memorable bursts across the sky before burning out.

The Star Nation was formed shortly after the Stargift fell from the sky...

A brief history and lore;

The Star Nation was formed shortly after the Stargift fell from the sky, ending the brutal Four Fires War in spectacular
and definitive fashion.


The Four Fires War

One ancient war, that is now closer to mythology than history, lends it's moral tales to modern thinking...

The Four Fires War was a generational battle that shook the foundations of each nation wreaking havoc and animosity.
It was a time of endless bloodshed, betrayal and destruction. Entire clans were wiped out and great works were toppled.
Dark Spirits fed on the horrors and plagued the land even further. While there are a few conflicting stories most Sphinxes
don't even know what started the war or how it gained it's name. While historians do recall the year of fire that ravaged
many lands, how it sparked into war is forgotten. Perhaps it's for the best though, leaving the bad blood in the ashes.


The Star Gift

The war was awful. It brought out the worst in everyone. Gods and spirits were not happy and they showed their wrath
as well as their wisdom though the later would not be revealed right away.
An unprecedented battle near the shores of the Lake of Shining Waters had begun with nearly every major Tribe present.
It's only with embarrassment and lowered eyes that any speak of this time... glory and honor had long since been buried under
blood and bone. It was during this battle while forests burned and sister killed sister that the the sky was ripped open
and a great burning chunk of the sky smashed onto the battlefield bringing devastation. Countless Sphinxes were instantly gone and
trees for miles around were knocked down by the blast. Silence was all that was left and the Four Fires War was over.

It would be a few years before any Sphinxes investigated the scene. Nature, as it does, had already begun to reclaim the
area with green life burying bones and animals enjoyed the shelter and plentiful new growth. It was happenstance that a
few local young hunters and adventurers met in the lands that their tribes had declared forbidden or haunted. Each of these
young Sphinxes were of different clans, tribes and families but they all had the same calling. On the surface they were all
seeking food and resources but their kinship grew from their adventuring souls. It was this group that found the Star Gift
still resting where if fell. A great giant roundish mound at the center of a deep bowl like valley. Wise Sphinxes may have
shown caution but instead the young group whooped and and raced to the mound to investigate in excitement! Small game
animals burst from berry rich bushes which simply added to the their excitement... though they all stopped near the mound.
Something about it caused a pause whether it was simply in respect of this gift from the stars or in recognition of it's
hidden powers would depend on which hero's story you were reading.

The mound seemed made of curious stone and was riddled with veins of silvery looking metal. There were also strange marks
upon the rock, almost like some sort of rune or pictograph but it was unfamiliar to the adventurers and they would never learn
if the Star Gift came with the runes of perhaps they were not truly the first to find it. The mound itself was big enough
to build a small village on and the bowl valley around could hold a great city like the people had had in the past.

One of the adventurers was an apprentice Copper Singer and had learned the songs of her clan that called forth the Great
Spirit's Teeth as her people referred to the rare metal. On impulse she tried her song on the mound and was rewarded buy
streams of the silvery metal being called forth! Self admittedly she never had the patience to actual learn how to form
copper via songs or forging but still this sky metal had a powerful feel. She sang out enough of the stuff to give some
to each of her new friends, not yet realizing how these great gifts would begin to reshape the world.

So the story goes...

The Peoples Nations

Many great tribal nations ward the lands of the Star Nation, each with its own distinct cultures, peoples and languages.
Most of the tribes of the Star Nation are named after animals who have (or at least had) some significant meaning to the
tribes, such as the People of the Deer and the People of the Cougar. Most of the larger tribal nations are made up of smaller
sub-tribes and clans which may or may not follow the same naming convention such as the Bad River Clan, the Dogrunners, the Peace Blankets and
Blue Hair tribe.

Languages

There are scores, if not hundreds of languages across the Star Nation, though a common language is spoken by many. It
originally began as a pidgin speak in Stargift village, cobbled together from several of it's founders native tounges
but over time grew into something new, eventually becoming a trade language and then a fully developed spoken and written
word. Many tribes never developed a written language of their own, but most have now incorporated the common tounges style
of writing and apply it to their own tounges, adding new pieces as they need. Those languages that did have some form
of writing also developed their own methods of recording words. The People of the Deer kept birch bark scrolls while the
People of the Caribou used a form of vellum. The people of the Mammoth carved their histories into tusks and soapstone and
the People of the Raven carved pictograph into whole logs and Longhouse walls. In Stargift city, simple writings use many
of these other methods but important writings are etched and engraved into thin metal plates.

Farming

As noted above there is a very well established tradition of agriculture among most of the tribes. Many 'forest gardens' and
wild spaces are also tended by specialists in order to grow and harvest the plants that have decided they do not want to
participate in traditional farming, such as types of mushrooms, ginseng and several other wild harvested plants. It should also
be noted for new visitors that there is no system of animal farming (with perhaps the oyster farms tended by the People of
the Raven as an exception) though many animals are befriended, guided and raised though other means. Pets are always popular and can vary from tribe
to tribe with wolves, cats and birds being some of the most popular universally though some nations have more personal or
unique choices. Horses are present in almost all the tribes raised with trust and training but without fences. A few other
select animals are raised in or near tribes/clans in mutually beneficial ways. Some wilder
places are tended by rangers and naturalists to control, or at least monitor, wild game and who follow whole herds.
Most tribes take this responsibility very seriously and actively work to adjust when something gets out of balance.
In a broad sense, planting certain fruit trees or clearing some pond weeds to make attractive areas for some game birds might
be on the fringes of farming. It should also be noted that many tribes often travel a great deal, whether to follow a herd
or to different seasonal hunting/farming grounds and constantly moving domesticated animals would be so much more of a
nuisance then it would be beneficial! Tales from the far south tell of different animal husbandry techniques (with creatures
such as Llamas and Cuy) but they have not spread north.

Many classes specialized in a building a friendship with an animal companion and it is not uncommon to see even the most dangerous
of creature travelling with and experienced Sphinx!

Star Metal

Star Metal is a universally revered natural metal as only a gift from the stars could be. This light silvery metal that holds it's shape well making it perfect for tools, weapons, decorations, building and more. It is nearly half the weight of its closes relative, silver. It holds an edge far longer than copper and never rusts or tarnishes. The Star Gift provided a lot of metal which was divided among the tribes and it is believed that deep in it's core there is still more though out of respect the Star Gift itself has never been mined, broken or dug into. Perhaps some Metal Singer will learn a method of fetching this prized resource. No sources other than the Star Gift have been found and it remains a valuable and treasured commodity. It is considered bad form, almost taboo to hoard Star Metal or not use it, even if only for decoration and while it is often traded it has never been considered a direct commodity. Due to this belief most Star Metal has a history... One persons lip piercing may have also been an ancestor's arrow tip, a chiefs eagle staff adornment, a traders cooking pot and maybe even one of the first pieces drawn from the Star Gift!

Other Metals

Most of the Star Nation treasure pure metals. Copper, silver, gold, iron for example, and most of that was originally harvested from the earth by Metal Singers.

Headdresses and Warbonnets


One of the most visually striking pieces of regalia in the Star Nation is the Headdress worn by Chieftains. There are several varieties with many different meanings all across the nation but the most widely seen version is the large and trailing Eagle Feather headdress. Most tribes respect the eagle feather and they usually carry a significant meaning, usually awarded for battle victories. This style of headdress began among the tribes of the plains and is attributed to the People of the Bison, People of the Horse and the lost People of the Cheetah, but over hundreds of generations the style has culturally drifted to be accepted among many tribes. There are tribes who still keep the traditions of their own style of headdresses, such as the buckskin/antler/owl feather headdress of the People of the Deer or the extremally large and round feather bonnets of the People of the Raven or even the hunted animal/monster skulls and hides worn by the People of the Wolf and People of the Cougar but the tall eagle trail style current reigns supreme... some Chiefs even wear both, one for home and tribal displays but another for large Stargift City councils.

Headdresses of these varieties are won or awarded only to leaders of the Star Nation. While some communities have differing degrees of rules about this, such as allowing a foreign dignitary a moment of wearing one, or providing a child a sense of wonder for a short time to inspire them to greatness, almost all tribes carry harsh punishments for wearing one inappropriately or impersonating a Chieftain! Entire tribes have been known to mobilize in great war parties at the theft of a headdress.

While some tribes may have variations or differ slightly on this topic, there is no gender distinction among who may wear a headdress.

As mentioned above, most headdresses are rewards for battles... there are some exceptions among different tribes. Some have a single headdress that is awarded to their own chief however they come into the position, be it hereditary, democracy, tests, trials or any other means. Some tribes also chose their Chieftains exclusively from Medicine People whos battles may have been purely spiritual but no less valid! Many tribes are proud of their leaders and are usually happy to talk about these things if asked!

As our Sphinxes world is a piece of historical fiction/speculation we've taken some liberties in order to align with our own world backgrounds. Specifically, there is two topics I'll briefly touch on.

Headdresses in general

The main Eagle Feather headdress as modeled above ordinally came from the Plains tribes but has spread to many other tribes in the resurgence of Native interests after North American governments undid the laws that made their cultures illegal. Some tribes did wear different types of headdress. Not all tribes had anything of the kind! ...but over the years it became more and more important and several tribes developed their own styles of headdresses but many styles are actually quite modern! Similar to the Roach description earlier (which was a warriors mark but evolved into a dancer fashion accessory) Headdresses carry a lot of meanings and those meanings differ strongly from tribe to tribe and person to person. It's not hard to learn more if you are up for a google trip!


Gender Roles.

Many tribes have gender rolls where the headdress is restricted to men only. This is changing in modern times, but also comes with some 'bet you didn't learn this in school' history notes. Several female chiefs have worn headdresses both in modern times (like Kimberly Jonathan) and days past (like Minnie Hollow Wood). Most of what you can google will still show a large gender divide, but our setting is meant to be much older and much more gender balanced (if perhaps leaning towards some stronger female roles). Now for an interesting learning, many tribes of groups of indigenous peoples of North America had strong female leaders including powerful war leaders. The problem arose when the Europeans arrived... they refused to talk to, negotiate with or even acknowledge any female leaders and forced most tribes to send only men to any kind of talk. This awful and unfortunate policy set history for women backwards again in ways that still have not bounced back.

If you want to read some more very interesting history on this topic, google some very cool people like Minnie Hollow Wood, Pretty Nose, Moving Robe Woman or One Who Walks with the Stars. All of these women were warriors or war leaders in the Battle of the Greasy Grass (or as you may have been taught, the Battle of Little Big Horn). This info was extra suppressed... not only were the americans defeated soundly, they were defeated by an army with plenty of warrior women which, from the american perspective was extra embarrassing, hence deleting as much of it from history as possible. There are a few different tales of that day, but one of the most prominent does have a female warrior as the person who killed Custer himself.

7. Stargift City

The beating Heart of the Star Nation where visitors can sample many of the wonders from across this vast land in one central location!

Stargift City

Countless generations have passed since the Star Gift fell from the sky. The Silvermetal camp grew into Stargift village
which in turn grew into the greatest city state of the Star Nation. The original tribal agreements creating an independent
zone of shared resource still stands and became the foundation of the Great Star Nation Compact.

Stargift City is renowned for it's beauty and innovation, as well as it's preservation of traditional building skills.
There are a few great earth mounds covered in stone creating nearly pyramid like central monuments, usually used for
important gatherings, rituals, sports, dances and entertainment. Surrounding these mounds are great Longhouse lodges in the Northern and
Eastern tribal styles built from massive lodge pines. Many smaller wooden buildings in turn fill the most of the other
open places inside the city, aside from gathering parks and some gardens. Originally some parts of the city were divided
into pieces for individual tribal needs but over the years there has been a major drift and these lines are all but blurred
out of existence with the exception being some important buildings have been created in other tribes own architecture style.
The main streets have been cobbled for practical reasons but smaller walkways are usually covered in grass or moss as most
prefer the natural atheistic.

There are some areas in the main part of the city set aside for camping and temporary buildings, usually for important travelers
or specific political or ritualistic reasons, such as a diplomat who prefers their sweat lodge covered in a traditional hide
or visiting chief who requires certain artifacts present to properly make a trade deal. The inner and outer rim of the
bowl valley is set aside for the camps of most other travellers and visitors who are not staying as a guest in town. Tipis
are by far the most popular style of travelling tent and the style has been adapted by many Tribes. Many wigwams are still
maintained as well buy locals for guest to use as a hospitality and welcoming feature. Other types of tents, lean-tos and
various travelling shelters can be seen scattered in the mix at different times of the year.


Stargift City itself is the largest city in the Star Nation and is a Hub of trade, diplomacy and culture. People of all
tribes are welcome and has a large permanent population though they are often outnumbered by the transient Sphinxes of the
city, traders, artists, explorers, ambassadors and adventurers are always passing through Stargift City. A lodge, building
or area is set aside for each People's tribe for their own spiritual needs however they wish to worship or show respect.

There is a great marketplace that showcases Tribal specialties and wonders. There are also inns, clubs, stages
and scores of other interesting shops. In a single day a visitor to the city may eat a meal of rare foods, get a tattoo,
watch a ball game, enjoy a Hoop Dance performance, shop for an instrument, pet or potion, view a butterfly garden, hire a warrior,
participate in a dance and then retire to a comfortable inn with a sauna... all while wondering about the hundreds of other wonders
yet to be experienced! There are not restaurants per say, but there are many open halls and lodges that are happy to provide
fancy or specialty foods to guests and it is considered polite and in good taste to offer a trade item or gift to the hosts.

While there are many ways to trade for fine food in Stargift City, food is considered a right of all People. There is one large
food hall where any Sphinx may go to receive as much simple food as they wish, usually a variation of meals made out of the
Three Sisters (corn, beans and squash).

The lush valley around the city is filled with farms and plenty of small forest gardens. Fruit, vegetables, herbs
and medicinal plants thrive in abundance near the Stargift. Varieties from all nations (and some from beyond!) are grown in
these fields though more than half is devoted to the traditional growing of the Three Sisters. A single mound is planted
with a few stalks of corn, a few beans and a few squash plants which all live in perfect (and symbolic) harmony. The corn
grows tall, beanstalks climb the fast growing corn and the squash's broad leaves and spikey vines protect the mound from
weeks, insects and rodents. Even distant exotics are grown here like tomatoes, potatoes, lingonberries, peppers, tomatillos,
vanilla and even avocados grow here along the more common blueberries, peanuts, cherries, pawpaws, pumpkins and huckleberries.
Only plants that require special conditions have not been grown in the nearby fields, such as wild rice though that is grown
in the very nearby Lake of Shining Waters and it's tributaries. A few regional plants are still the domain of their
individual nations but are sometimes imported, such as quinoa, pineapple and maple syrup.

Stargift City is independent but a part of each of the People's Tribes and holds a special unique status. The Grand Chief is
considered the leader of all of the Tribes but this power is only used for the benefit of all, not as a method to impose
unnecessary conditions upon any People. For example, the Grand Chief may not agree with a Tribe's laws but that is a matter
for that Tribe not to be interfered with. Meanwhile if a great group of monsters invade a Tribe's land the Grand Chief
may conscript warriors from all nations to join the battle, or if a drought withers one Tribe's crops the Grand Chief may
request tithes of food to aid in the suffering Tribes survival. It is a rare but meaningful event that requires this sort
of action. Most commonly requests are made rather than demands ordered.

The beating heart of the Star Nation lives and works in Stargift City in the form of a Grand Chief whose job is to keep each
of the nations in good relations, mediating disputes, delegating resources and protecting the Nation. The High Chief is
elected by vote via the People's Council and their term is as long as the people desire. Any member of the council may
call a for a new vote at any time and a new (or the standing) Chief requires at least two thirds of the votes. Many Sphinxes
called to this position become greatly beloved and often hold the job for life. There is an unspoken rule that no council
member may call for a vote within a year of a successful vote in order to not bog down the system.

The Council itself is composed of a single member of each of the People's Tribe.
The size of a People's Tribe is not relevant to the Council members status and does not affect the power of their vote.
The Council members carry a second duty as ambassadors in Stargift city and are the central leaders that visitors can
petition for council or make requests of the different Tribes. Most councillors keep their own camp or building in the city
with many other helpers to deal with day to day tasks.
Each Nation has their own methods for choosing their Council Member. Some are already Chiefs, some are chosen by vote, trial
or combat. Some are magically divined. Some are limited to experienced Elders. This is a personal choice of the tribes
and the High Chiefs have no say in the matter.

How to become a Chieftain!



How we Lead is a reflection of how we become Leaders...


There are many ways to become a leader in the many varied tribes of the Star Nation. Some earn the title through battle, some through charisma, others ritual or great deeds. Perhaps you're an expert in stealing horses from a rival tribe or a monster hunter who keeps a tribe safe from certain monsters. Maybe you are blessed with overflowing wisdom and everyone comes to you for advice and council. Maybe you performed a certain great deed or series of great deeds that can only be performed by heroes (like ride an orca, leap from a cliff and survive by special means or summon a particular great spirit). Perhaps you are simply wealthy and make a fortune trading that you invest in your community or maybe you are a world class artist who can carve, bead, sing or dance in ways that take peoples breath away... Every tribe has a method of choosing their leader, what's yours?!


There are two things you must describe for a chance to win the female chief above.

First you must name your People. Pick a tribe name... Please avoid the 17 major Animal Clans (as mentioned earlier in this thread), but beyond that anything is an option. There are hundreds and hundreds of tribes, many named for types of animals (ex. Fox Warriors) but just as many have different deed type names (ex.. Long Canoe Wanderers) or family names (ex. Children of Wildflower) or plant/item (ex. Cloudberry tribe or Lightning Blanket tribe) names etc. etc.... There are also lots of similar names to the main animal Tribes, for example you cannot choose People of the Wolf for this contest but you could still make your tribe People of the Black Wolf, or the Lone Wolves or the Wolf Who Ate the Sky Tribe or the Wolf Tooth Tribe or the Howling River Wolves... etc. etc.

Second describe how the Sphinx above became the leader of her tribe. You can do this however you want with no limits or restrictions. Add pictures, tell a story, write her song, list her deeds... or anything you feel expresses her journey to chief. You have 24 hours from this post to enter this contest. After 24 hours I will choose the entry with the most 'likes', used as a form of voting. (if there is a tie we'll roll or random!)

Game Day!

Scream and Run

Scream and Run might seem like silly play but is an important game of skill and some, children and adults alike, enjoy the cathartic release. It is very simple to explain. There is a starting line and when ready you start to scream and run... and you continue running until you cannot scream any longer! The person who gets the furthest is the winner.

Besides the fact that children love screaming and not getting in trouble, this game of skill teaches one to be able to communicate while being active which is extremely important on the battlefield as well as when hunting the great herds. Without practise one tends to easily run out of breath when this sort of communication is the most important! More advanced warriors can scream their own personal battle cries while running towards an enemy and this level intimidation cannot be underestimated.

Scream and Run the Game

This game takes place on pages 333, 334 and 335. In order to play you must post an image of one of your Sphinxes along with an exaggerated SCREEEAAAMMM effect of some kind. (it can be a different word or sound but must be modified somehow... say enlarged, or with a different font or colour... whatever you feel shows off your own cry!) Whoever posts the most contest posts total on those three pages wins the following Sphinx!

Marbles

People of the Wolf most likely were the first to play the game of Marbles. It's a fairly simple game that involves a very large circle, usually about 20 paces, with a small hole just barely big enough to fit the large stone marbles. Each player takes turns tossing their marble towards the hole. When it comes back to your turn you may toss your marble again, and so on, until someone gets their marble in the hole. Instead of aiming to get closer to the hole, you may use your marble to hit other peoples marbles to knock them farther away, and keeping that in mind, there is no out of bounds!

This game starts on page 335. The first person to post a picture of a marble on THREE consecutive pages in the 8th post position, will win this game! If anyone else posts a marble picture that touches the middle marble (7th and 9th posts) no one scores a point and the game count starts over again!

Hoop and Pole



One does not have to stretch the imagination to understand the useful skills developed playing Hoop and Pole! A netted hoop is rolled and players throw their poles trying to score by getting it through different holes. Several Tribe play this game with different netting patterns and different scoring methods but for todays game we'll use the children's version made popular by the People of the Bison. The center hole is the Bull Bison and worth 5 points. The squares touching the bull are the Cows and they are worth 3 points. Most other squares are coyotes and they are worth 1 point. The outer ring's holes are Calves and they are worth 2 points. The ring will be tossed as often as it takes for the first person to get 21 points, who wins!


Hoop and Pole the Game

-This game starts on page 334.

-ANYONE may repost the image of the Hoop from above in this thread at any time (after the contest starts on page 334).

-The first FOUR people to post an image of a Pole (spear/stick/arrow) after the hoop has been posted earn points. 1st post = 5 points, 2nd = 3, 3rd = 1 and 4th = 2.

-You may not post a Pole in any round where you toss the hoop!

-Any player may toss the Hoop a max of THREE times and you may not through it consecutively. (example, you cannot throw it twice in a row, but you can toss it again after anyone else has tossed it.)

-The contest is over when someone scores 21 points!

Each item added will be duplicated and for any Sphinx entered an additional Sphinx will be added to the prize pool.

9. The Temple of Bastet

The scent of heady incense is the first thing to hit your senses when you enter the temple to the cat goddess Bastet. Large, decorated pillars line the main room stretching to the ceiling high above which is also elaborately painted with hieroglyphic images of Bastet with many cats.
On pillows around the temple cats of varying types lounge about, some scamper and play chasing the myriad of cat toys that litter the floor. Golden bowls filled to the brim with the choicest treats are laid out for them. In the middle of the expansive temple room is an indoors fountain painted with images of cats, but instead of water it is magically enchanted to spray forth fresh cream from the mouths of bas relief cat heads.
At the back of the temple room stands a gigantic, golden statue of Bastet herself in her human bodied and cat headed form. The many light sconces and lamp lights nearly dance their radiance upon her.

Posted clearly were the rules of the Temple.

To play this game I'll post an item or pet up for a pretend trade. Then (with the prompt) have one of your sphinxes (for RP purposes only) post a picture of something they would trade for the item. (Again, just a picture of any object. This is not a real sphinx item trade.)

I will use a random item generator of 5 objects before the item for trade is put up. (I will keep this list secret until after the trading offers are complete.) The first posted item that's on the list of 5 will win. If nobody matches one of the items within 5 minutes it will go into another round of guessing until somebody gets an item on the list.

Since it's a random generator it has some pretty off the wall things on there, so feel free to post anything that is an object. (For example, from my first random test I have...pair of socks, hand fan, roll of gauze, mirror, martini glass.) I'll be pretty generous with finding something close enough. Such as 'martini glass' I would count any sort of drinking glass. The picture you post can only have one item in it to avoid confusion.

You cannot post the same item as somebody before you (for that round), but may re-post a different item if that occurs.


I'll leave this up just in case there are questions before we start.

It seems as if animals very rarely appear on it as well. O.o So if you want to risk posting an animal that is fine, but an object with the animal painted/carved/etc on it would count as well.

I have a 'thing' to give away and if you can guess what it is, you win it! After I answer a question the first person to post their question will have their's answered. BUT if you post you cannot post a question again twice in a row. (So a question, skip a round, then you can question again.) Here's how this is going to work. I want you to guess even or odd for five separate d20 dice rolls. You can do this by simply guessing or, if you really want to leave things in the hands of Lady Luck, by rolling five d20s. If you roll a 1 in your first dice roll, I will take your first guess to be odd, etc. Your guesses should all be in one post.

When the game has closed, I will roll five d20s in the thread. If my first roll is a 1 and you guess odd for your first guess, you will get a point, and so on. The person with the most points will win our prize! If there is a tie, it will be decided by random or the dice.

As a bonus, you can guess the total sum of the five dice that I roll at the end of the game. If anyone gets the sum right, I will give a bonus prize to that person whether the win or lose the first part of the game.

You cannot edit or repost for this game! So be sure that your post is correct and complete before posting! I will take whatever you post for the game, even if it is incomplete and still award points for anything correct. This is a trading draw. If you trade in any sort of cookie from your inventory (Phae cookie, plate of cookies, etc) you will be put on the list for a cool Knight of the Dark makeover for one of your sphinxes.

To enter post the words "Mmmm cookies." (in bold and larger size) with the image of the cookie from your inventory that you are trading along with the sphinx who would be getting the makeover if you win. Magical cookies (ie. Phae cookies) will give you two slots in the draw.


Alternatively you may enter a different draw for a red sunsword. To enter post the words "Ooo, cookies!" (in bold and larger font) along with a picture of somebody eating cookies.


A third alternative... you may post the picture of a sphinx you own who has eaten a cookie with one of the cookie stamps on them along with the words "No thank you, I've had enough cookies." (in bold and larger font) to be entered into a draw to win a non-red sunsword of your choice (blue, green, yellow or purple). This does not need to be attached to that sphinx.

A fourth alternative... you may risk one of your sphinxes in a draw for a Phae chocolate chip cookie (the totally random kind). To enter post the words "Sure, I'll join for cookies!" (in bold and larger font) along with the sphinx you are risking. There will be a draw for the winner and whoever 'wins' will lose that sphinx and gain a cookie. We will make-over the sphinx into a knight of the dark and use them in the future however we please (game, sales, stuffed in Selene IV's closet and lost for a time, whatever).

In a nutshell, I'm still making more centaur clothing/hair/tails/items. I would like to give you guys a chance to help me out here.

Since only female centaurs have been revealed so far this is the only gender option for this contest. I would like some examples of hairstyles/tails/clothing for female centaurs to have. I will try to put my own spin on the final product if possible. Sometimes something like a mohawk is generic and doesn't need (or can't even be) changed. You may use picture examples, or even draw up your own design. You can submit up to three examples of a similar design if you need to express it better. Or you can use extra pictures to mix it into something new! (ie. this hair, with these bangs. Or three different styles of a similar mohawk for angles, etc)

I will choose at least one design that inspires me. The one(s) I choose will get a semi-custom female centaur with their entry templated and on them. The style does not need to be Star Nation, but if it seems more suiting to centaurs from another land I'll use the other face mod. ^_^

A few notes about types of items...
Hairstyles can't really be copyrighted so I may make those pretty close.
Clothing/items, especially from somebody's art, may be more individualistic and only inspiration will be taken from them.


When filling out the form for class it should be level 3 or less. So nothing that could be a 3.5 or higher, no chieftains/Queens/priestess of a certain deity/etc.

Here's how this is going to work. I want you to guess even or odd for five separate d20 dice rolls. You can do this by simply guessing or, if you really want to leave things in the hands of Lady Luck, by rolling five d20s. If you roll a 1 in your first dice roll, I will take your first guess to be odd, etc. Your guesses should all be in one post.

When the game has closed, I will roll five d20s in the thread. If my first roll is a 1 and you guess odd for your first guess, you will get a point, and so on. The person with the most points will win our prize! If there is a tie, it will be decided by random or the dice.

As a bonus, you can guess the total sum of the five dice that I roll at the end of the game. If anyone gets the sum right, I will give a bonus prize to that person whether they win or lose the first part of the game.

There are two things you must describe for a chance to win the female chief above.

First you must name your People. Pick a tribe name... Please avoid the 17 major Animal Clans (as mentioned earlier in this thread), but beyond that anything is an option. There are hundreds and hundreds of tribes, many named for types of animals (ex. Fox Warriors) but just as many have different deed type names (ex.. Long Canoe Wanderers) or family names (ex. Children of Wildflower) or plant/item (ex. Cloudberry tribe or Lightning Blanket tribe) names etc. etc.... There are also lots of similar names to the main animal Tribes, for example you cannot choose People of the Wolf for this contest but you could still make your tribe People of the Black Wolf, or the Lone Wolves or the Wolf Who Ate the Sky Tribe or the Wolf Tooth Tribe or the Howling River Wolves... etc. etc.

Second describe how the Sphinx above became the leader of her tribe. You can do this however you want with no limits or restrictions. Add pictures, tell a story, write her song, list her deeds... or anything you feel expresses her journey to chief. You have 24 hours from this post to enter this contest. For female Sphinxes you have your choice of the job costume posted above, or you may have the metal effect added to an existing costume along with the job title changes.

-This game starts on page 334.

-ANYONE may repost the image of the Hoop from above in this thread at any time (after the contest starts on page 334).

-The first FOUR people to post an image of a Pole (spear/stick/arrow) after the hoop has been posted earn points. 1st post = 5 points, 2nd = 3, 3rd = 1 and 4th = 2.

-You may not post a Pole in any round where you toss the hoop!

-Any player may toss the Hoop a max of THREE times and you may not through it consecutively. (example, you cannot throw it twice in a row, but you can toss it again after anyone else has tossed it.)

-The contest is over when someone scores 21 points!

EDIT rule for clarity!

The Hoop can only be in play for one game at a time. Another hoop cannot be thrown until the first game is finshed (with 4 players posting poles). If a second hoop is thrown before that by accident, it simply does not count in any way towards this game!


(extra rule, just in case. If there is a tie for 21 points the game continues until someone has a higher score. Even players with lower skills may continue to play and may catch up! If multiple people score 21 or higher at the same time, the winner will the person with the most points.)
