#1 - I would think that any of the demon prompts already put up might be alright if they fit your concepts? Feel free to take some very liberal interpretations of what we've put up... Many similar systems have very defined settings so it is easier to create content that fits (examples of others would be a game were everyone is werewolf from a very modern setting, or everyone is characters on a space ship and all of the characters are from a very limited pool of races/backgrounds) where we have done the complete opposite have Sphinxes coming from scores of different backgrounds, portaled in from other settings, and just plain as wide open as we can to let everyone play pretty much anything!
#2 - at the moment we don't have any set limit/standard for this kind of thing and it is as open as you'd like it to be. There was a big official roleplay a few years back (you can still go and read it if you like!) where the characters came upon a city of portals which we've used as a major gateway for characters to pop in and out of our Sphinxy universe as well as providing a reason to Sphinxify characters (most who use the portals would be shapechanged into Sphinxes when they got to this world). Others have RPed it in other ways as well (we personally have been crossing our D&D characters over and many of them have dimension hopping abilities) and your welcome to set things up however you'd like! Magic accident turned your pony into a Sphinx? cool. Futuristic canine super soldier who got cursed by a wizard and sent to Ahket and just happens to look like a Netjer? cool. Grew up in Ahket, never walked more then 3 blocks from your home and are a regular Sphinx with the classic lion tail, ears and human face but have a great story to tell? cool.
#3 - for now I would say it is totally up to you to how you want to roleplay it. bringing new powers can be fun to roleplay but so is limiting powers... both can be great storytelling tools so whatever works for you! Now to expand on this one (not exactly what you asked) we have contemplated a few different options for this as well such as developing a very specific Sphinx RP system created just for roleplaying Sphinx's (it might provide more satisfaction to advance characters this way, but might feel limiting?), using an outside system (such as pathfinder or the traits from white wolf larps books) so that characters could develop skills/powers in a uniform style (do all your ranks and go up a level kind of thing)... but those are still musings and I'd like to see how everyone enjoys this system and get more feedback, (-8

I think that any prompt list that you feel can apply to your character should be open to them. So in your example your character could just do a courtier one if you'd like, but you would also have the option to do an earlier one to delve into character pasts as well if it seemed fun! The prompts don't always need to follow a time continuity if it helps tell a good story and they can also be used as a fun way to explain some of the characters progression! Awesome! I have lots of plots now. Muahahahahah

Im finding that a lot of the prompts tie into each other. Would it be ok to merge a few other them together? Otherwise, theres a lot of backtracking (you can see it with Shani right now if you look into the post)

So far I think I understand how this works, especially thanks to Pooka's lovely examples, haha! Right now I definitely have some favorites, my newlywed couple would probably be the first two I focus on to really flesh things out. Might I be able to request pirates and scribe prompts? XD

I do sometimes try to create a theme or narrative hidden in the prompts that might help with a complete story but if some of them come to close I'd be more likely to add some revisions or alternate (same level) prompts to make sure that there is more storytelling options to go around. ...adds scribes and pirates to the list...

Thanks so much for every one who just jumped right in and tried out this system! Everything here is kind of new and it might be hard to get a good feel of exactly the kinds of stuff we're looking/hoping for without lots of examples. ...so I'm going to jump right in and add some input on the entries into the Sphinx stories so far, (-8 I'm not picking anyone in particular order and don't take anything I mention personally towards your work or style in any way, please! I just want to share some of my experience from similar systems and see if I can help everyone get the most fun out of this kind roleplaying/storytelling and expand on the heart of the prompts.
also feel free to totally ignore these comments anyways! If we move to a more prize oriented system then we will be more strict with entries but at the moment what I really hope for more then anything is that you can find any sort of inspiration from this system for yourself and to help with roleplaying! Don't read my comments below about things like word count and feel like this stuff isn't for you! If writing a 1000 words is a scary feat for you don't let that stop you for having fun and playing around in here. These prompts might just be a way to play, learn, improve and flex your creativity, (-8 (bottom line translation, if I start giving out major prizes like Sphinxes/upgrades etc. I'll be much more picky with entries, but even then everyone is welcome to use anything they find in here to help develop your characters in any way you find fun or inspiring!)
I'm going to focus on some of the best examples and encourage everyone to take a peek if you haven't already! Read everything and peek at the lovely art, its awesome stuff, (-8 and a great way to get to know your Sphinxy neighbors!
Nephthys' posts (Shyam - The Dancer) are right on and almost exactly what we're looking for in a story style written entry. Besides a fun story I can dissect the individual pieces a bit as well. The first post comes in at about 2000 words which is a great number to shoot for. While we are always aiming for quality over quantity the word count does also show a commitment of time and a healthy amount of information. The story is fun, the format is nice and easy to read (paragraphs, spelling etc.) and it definitely covers all of the information we would be looking for in this prompt entry.
Mr. Pooka note about short stories... the definition of a short story is kind of tricky to nail down because there are many and the concept has changed throughout history. Many/most of the entries would probably fall under the category of short stories and a good guideline would be between 1000 and 4000 words. (as a fun side note, if you manage to write 10 prompts with 4000 words, or 20 with 2000, you've just reached the usual accepted minimum of words to be considered a novel which would be a wonderful feat!) There are also many other writing styles available which would be measure by different means such as diary entries, lyric/poetry (I'm leaning towards the classics like The Raven, or The Highwayman or the sagas of Icelanders vs. simple Haiku or limericks! ...but even then, a whole collection of Haiku for a ninja entry or a collection of inappropriate limericks for a particularly ribald bard might just do as well!), or role-plays and are all a bit harder to actually quantify.
I also super love Minkey's intro post! All of the information and the illustrations really help you get to know the character your going to read about and roleplay with! Also awesome and in the same category are Toxi's and Kurai's bios... lots of fun useful info that makes for a great introduction for new people (and fun to write for character development!)
Melody's_angel also did a wonderful and great art prompt! Besides just being pretty it also illustrates just what we're looking for, you can see the work put in (details and backgrounds) and really does help tell the story! I know Pooka also put up some art examples above for another group she participates in if you missed them (and also wanted to mention that her entries were really purely for the art category and all of the stories/text she added was just for fun and flavour or to help fill in what was going on in the image.)
gah, I need to add a few more comments (I'm a bit all over the place trying to catch up!) but also anyone feel free to ask me any questions about their entries if your curious!

Sure^^ These are the prompts for Shani-- I obtained her by being able to 'capture' her when the demons were set loose in Ahket last year. So--for her specifically--Rank 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 2.4, 2.5 could technically be combined into one big prompt. Rank 1.4, 1.5 and 2.1 are also connected I just wanted to know if you wanted everything individual no matter how similar they are to that specific backstory-- and will accept some repeating--or if some merging can be done, as if it was one big story^^ Make sense? I..technically merged 1.4 and 1.5 together for Shani but I think it worked out. I had a hard time trying ot be 'different' enough for 1.1 and 1.2 (hence different medium) and 2.1 will be a bit of a repeat from 1.4/1.5 o.o I know its on a case by case thing^^ Also--is the length and such with my written stuff fine?

I added six new prompts and I've got a bunch more in progress, (-8
[q]Peasants[/quote]
there should be a peasant prompt up soon, (-8
I've got a couple of ideas for this but I'm still sort of sorting my brain on the topic... we've got lots of characters with draconic backgrounds so there seems to be some good stuff to go on but also may of the traits are meant to be kind of universal (like dragon wings for example, they are also used for bat/vampire/demon concepts etc...) so I'm also contemplating a 'trait' prompt where characters can delve into their genetic pool and explore the history/what its like to be a Sphinx with a dragon tail, feather wings, lynx ears, ram horns and glowing eyes... which might also be good? *ponders*
everything looks awesome and there is no wrong way to do anything, (-8 hopefully its just fun and there is some inspiration to be found.
like I just mentioned, there really is no way to do anything wrong with what we're doing at the moment. my own personal goals would be to aim for 1000-4000 words for an entry (I story writing!) and if we ever move to a prize system we'd prob have stricter requirements for now I just want to have fun with this system and see if anyone can get some fun ideas out of it! There is a lot of potential for growth and evolution here....
I see what you mean and some of the prompts may need tweaking or additions in the future (one option I was considering was some sort of wildcard extra prompts listed with each job that could be switched in and out if you could not find inspiration or found a non-applicable prompt number) but when I write the prompts I often start growing a story in my imagination.... certainly different prompts can (and really should be) connected by theme and the character itself... I think I could get ramble-y without getting to what I'm trying to say, let me give super brief example of what I was thinking when I put this prompt together... perhaps that might help my brain work (-8
super brief story of Zuraniel a succubus soon to be Sphinxified, before her journey to the light and ultimately becoming a paladin! (-8 for examples...
Rank 1
1. Where did you come from? (a tortuous hell, an insane abyss, a manifestation of a blacked soul, a dark gods realm...)
Zuranial was a fairly old demoness and had lots of experience living in the abyss as well as traveling to human realms for her 'work'... dealing with the clique of other demons she lived with, her abyssal homes (bouncing from one influential/fun/powerful demon to the next, staying with a covey of other succubi, never settling into a rhythm following the chaotic nature of the Abyss..)
2. How did you get out? (escaped? summoned by horrific ritual? send on a mission from someone worse than you?)
Zuranial's variety of succubi had much more freedom then the other demons around her and she could travel to the prime planes (such as Ahket) at will and did often to corrupt/seduce and generally sew discord for the greater goal of more dark souls for the pit... this would be a great spot to explore one of the more interesting stories such as an elaborate plan to tear apart a powerful family through intrigue and infidelity or performing a mission at the command of one of her consorts that was not her usual cup of lubricant such as something boring and mundane such as an assassination or theft? She had also been summoned in the past and might have an entertaining story there as well! (good ole' summon monster VI... I'm a sexy, skilled temptress and you want me to fight a bunch of gnome barbarians? couldn't you summon something more appropriate? ... see how long you can berate your summoner while the spell times out...)
3. Why are you here/what is your motivation? (just reveling in your freedom? forced to complete jobs by a demonologist? to burn the entire earth into a beautiful pile of cinder and ash?)
Zuranial loved her job and found satisfaction in her skills with a heavy focus on her pride of a job well done. its all about the thrills and the pride of being able to destroy people. it could be a sabbatical of sorts (opportunistically searching for easy targets) or a specifically planned mission of discord but for my story I'd focus mostly on her motivation... pure job satisfaction.
4. What is your method of darkness? (seduction, fear, brutality, manipulation...)
this would be a good opportunity to describe a well thought out destruction story (or even a story where she fails! breaking up the happy paladin couple was just not as easy as a couple of charm spells and well planned entrances.) and delving into the details of how she goes about accomplishing her goals. I have a feeling that this would be one of those stories I'm PM in and not post in the thread!
5. Do you have a faith or philosophy? (minion of a dark lord? good and light are unnatural and must be destroyed/devoured? nothing at all, your completely nihilistic or chaotic? out to prove that if someone can be corrupted they were never good in the first place anyways?)
chaos and discord pure and simple... succubi from Zuranial's setting are abyss demons created from chaos and evil and just running wild. I could delve into a story of randomness to explain, but Zuranial also did probably jump from philosophies of the week often under the influence of smart and wiley demon lords and a description of her joining a few different cults (or one particularly dark or wacky one) could also be fun!
Rank 2
1. What sort of powers do you possess? (nothing but a quick mind/tongue? ability to provide powers through pacts? network of blackmailed simpletons/worshipers? powerful brutal violence?)
here is where I'd go into some details on the technical of her actual powers and abilities... how her charms work, how she used teleportation magic to be in two places as once (great for creating alibies!), her various immunities, access to a fun toolkit of magic powers etc...
I think I can find enough to make the different prompts different for my own storytelling methods... As I was typing it did also make me think that the prompts are generally meant to be very wide open and interpretable so that everyone could hopefully address different prompt numbers tons of times and all come up with something new and different. *ponders more*
