Byleiptr noticed the discussion between the Sphinxes of Ahket and felt he could had some of his extensive farming knowledge...Holly leaves (not the berries!) are a common browse for many leaf eating creatures. In some lands they save it as a 'just in case' sort of animal feed for when everything else has run out though in places like Katterheim it is actively cultivated for late winter feeding for sheep, goats and cows. The short summers and rocky soil (near this city in particular) make for short and limited seasons of farming yet the Holly thrives in gravely places where corns, or grains as you call them in Ahket, will not take. All types of deer, including moose, elk and their giant cousins, browse on the holly as well. A little lesson you can learn from the wild deer will also help if you are feeding holly to your flock. The Deer will find a source of holly and chew off the branches as near to the bush or truck as possible and leave the leaves to sit on the ground for a few days before returning to eat them as a couple of days off the plant seem to make them much more palatable to the animals... I've found the same from my own sheep. Though my goats of course would eat and digest anything I wouldn't use them for a measure of good browse!
I've also heard that many of the people of the Isles also feed holly to their animals, though not always as a source of food. A few leaves at the beginning of the season supposedly wards away the various fairies and demons of their lands and acts as a protective charm! I once met some mountain dwelling cow herders who said something similar but instead of feeding it to the cows they adorned them with wreaths, crowns or halters to create charms with the same effect... though they added several other local herbs, shrubs and flowers along with bells to complete the magic. Whether the magic worked or not, it made for a fine looking parade of well dressed mountain cattle!-------------------------------- Mr. Pooka note! I'm not a doctor or veterinarian but I do read a lot of old and interesting books, (-8 Don't eat holly or feed it to your pets based on what anyone says on the internet of course! In all parts of Europe animals eat holly and you'll still see it in lots of hedgerows containing lifestock but really read a book or ask a professional if you need to feed your sheep some holly! (-8 --------------------------------

I dont think I have any unless the yule priestess crown counts? Yup, it counts. A side note, Mr. Pooka said that the crowns are 'ivy' when they're actually grape vines. lol Close enough in appearance though, I think. And darn it, I keep wanting to make a RP post, but I can't think of anything good.

I figured but thought it was best to ask <3<3
And that's soo interesting! I know that there are different species of holly as well..like the Chinese version is accumulated to hot temperaures and has a round profile. Maybe the levels of 'bad stuff' for animals is different depending on where in the world it grows? o.o

Malixen had been curious about the invitation the Sigurdsdoitters had given her to join them for a mid-winter celebration. 'Winter', she didn't like that part of the invite. She hated the cold and was the type who spent frigid days laying upon hot embers of a long firepit just to keep warm. The snowflakes dancing upon the cool wind that blew from the portal into the town square of Ahket wasn't helping to change her mind. But she did say that she would at least take a peek.
With a resigned sigh Malixen stepped through the portal, feeling the cold, biting snow crunch beneath her paws.Malixen: Nope. Was all she said in a decisive manner before turning right back around through the portal into nice hot and sunny Khemet.
