I heard the Artemis Fowl movie got put into the dreaded movie purgatory since it's conception... which was how many years ago, I can't remember. But it's definitely changed enough hands that I figured it would be a hit or miss. Coupled with the fact that Disney just put it straight on their streaming site while other movies like Mulan or Black Widow have yet to be released. However, I have been rewatching the old Scooby-Doo cartoons xD to fill my time up. I didn't think I'd enjoy the 2010 remake but it was oddly ridiculous and a good ol' time to be had. But I do really miss going to see movies It'll be one the first things I do once I feel safe again from the viruses that be. ^^;

Yeah, it's always a major bummer when an adaption you're really looking forward to ends up in development hell. Not many good movies come out of that situation.
Artemis Fowl and Percy Jackson were two series I missed when they were first released, but hearing the books and movies compared, the book series sounds like it has a really interesting premise!

I agree 10 million percent about going to the movies again! Not being able to head off to the store for a quick thing like milk is a minor and bearable annoyance, but going to see a movie is truly the top of my list thing I miss the most.
I don't often trust movie reviews... There's lots of movies and shows I really liked that are pretty panned and visa-versa, so I like to go in with an open mind and hope, (-8
and I love Scooby Doo movies, (-8 Even the worst ones still make me pretty happy and there are some super gems out there, like Zombie Island, the Witches Curse, Camp Scare... and I liked those remakes as well, for the same reasons. They were fun, didn't take themselves to seriously and were just Scooby Doo movies!

I also kind of liked the new computer graphics Scoob movie but it was weird that they just dropped all the traditional voice actors for C-list stars instead...
Oh, Percy Jackson is a super cool concept! (it is on my short list of inspirations for our last major RP, the Yamasugi Golden Anime setting...) ... I liked the movies myself, but I think that has to do with experiencing the media backwards. I saw the first movie without knowing anything about the books.
Pooka had a theory about this concept from waaaay back when... every since we saw Jurassic Park in the theater. She loves dinosaurs and had already read the book and while still happy with the film I remember a conversation we had about how the book was better which lead to the the theory. She suggested that the books are almost always better so, if you watched a movie first and enjoyed it you'd probably extra enjoy reading the books because it should be even better, (-8

I don't trust movie ratings either, but that's mostly because I think critics are too far atop their high horses. People critique art and never stop to think... that no one really cares! It's just a movie! xD But on the other hand, I've really seen some garbage movies that several bad reviews could've saved me some money.
Oh no no no, I can't handle a change like that. xD Especially since I just found out that same actress (Grey Delisle) that played Azula from ATLA also played Daphne for many, many years. Well, them and a slew of other notable characters, but I can't imagine anyone else doing Daphne...
EDIT: I generally think the book is always better! I do find some rare instances where the books and the movies are on the same level of amazing. I thought that about the first two HP movies and books even with some of the details missing from the movies. Same for Crazy Rich Asians. That was really phenomonal! <3

lol sio I once went to a movie cause I thought the trailer looked interesting, then myself, my friend, and two other couples were all that were in the theater , and one couple left less than halfway through the movie xdd
crazy rich Asians was an awesome movie, I hope they make the other two books into movies as well, the series was hysterical

Have you read all the books, Milo? I've had the second and third installments sitting in my library giving me the proverbial stink eye to read them xD But I'm afraid I won't enjoy it as much as I did the first book when I read it awhile ago. It's like... someone please hold my hand, I have anxiety about reading sequels, rofl.

I tend to judge movies too much by their trailers. It's because I heard something once (can't remember where) that a trailer is supposed to be some of the best clips from the movie. So if the trailer isn't very good then you know that was their 'best' clips and, um, it's just not going to be good.
And Mr. Pooka had it backwards. I read Jurassic Park a couple of years after seeing the movie, and when I was so happy with how much better it was I sort of came to that epiphany. XD So sometimes I'll even save reading a book, that I know is going to be a movie soon, to read afterwards... just because it will be a nicer experience. lol

Thanks everyone. Today was good at work. Cheryl, our one shift leader, got me a cute butterfly votive holder and there was even a card signed by everyone there on the morning shift. It was also a non-crazy day. We had our typical rush, but it was actually good.

Sounds like a pretty good birthday at work, (-8
and I feel the same way about movie reviews, especially people's reliance on big collectives now like Rotten Tomatoes (where I swear no on has an original opinion and everyone just sits around waiting for someone 'cooler' then them to write something then they say the same thing) or IMDB (where almost all movies have a 6-7 out of ten rating which just shows that there is an equal amount of people of who love some movies as hate them and the bulk of the averages are balances from 1s or 10s.) Occasionally I used to read a review by someone I'd agreed with before, like way back when there used to be individual reviewers... odds were in your favour if you had similar tastes but even then you had to think for yourself!
totally! I think the same goes for replacing Matthew Lillard who is the perfect successor to Shaggy and would have loved to voiced the part! It was kind of jarring hearing someone else do the part and not really even try to do 'the voice'...
I enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians but haven't read the book... wow, I've been so bad for reading books the last decade! I used to devour multiple books a week but somehow the internet devours my time... but I used to love sequels and trilogies once I found something awesome I just couldn't get enough! I think the worst part for me was when you were getting near the end of a good series... you just don't want them to end!

I'm in the middle of rereading The Lord of the Rings. It's been a good twenty years since I last read the volumes as I am pretty sure I was in the middle of reading them for the first time when the movies first came out. And, I have to say, I cannot believe how much I'd forgotten about the book. It's like reading it for the first time all over again. I'm sure this mostly has to do with the simple time gap and age differences between the readings, but I think it is also very different because I know so much more about the LoTR universe this time around. *is a huge LoTR fan and has done LOTS of additional reading outside of the main story*
I also think I agree with the movie first, book second theory. I have definitely gone back and read books that I saw as movies first, and while they may be different, I wind up loving both versions. The reverse is not always true, though. I wonder if it's due to the fact that if there is no movie to reference, I create the scene from scratch in my head. So, when there is a movie made later, all I can think is, "That is not how I pictured so and so or such a place or such an event happening."

I could totally do a LOTR movie marathon, it's been a while! ...and that's an interesting point about rereading the series. I haven't read it in soooo long it might be a totally new experience now! I'm trying to wrack my brain on this one, but someone, I think Christopher Lee? mentioned in an interview that he enjoyed reading the book at least once a year! I don't think I've read anything more than a couple of times and that's pretty rare...
Somewhere in the back room I have this fun LOTR toy set from burger king that makes a pretty nice display, (-8
